Head of Conveyancing

Days: Monday – Friday
Hours: 09:00 – 17:30
Reports to: Senior Management Team
Salary: £65,000 – £90,000
Positions available: 2
Locations: One based in Bristol & one based in Cheltenham

Job Summary

Acts on behalf of and gives legal advice to private and commercial clients under the supervision of the Senior Management team. Progressing files including drafting legal correspondence, corresponding with clients and any experts and managing fee earners within the department.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Agree the strategy of cases with the Supervising Solicitor, take instructions and advise clients on legal matters relevant to their cases
  • Build strong relationships with clients
  • Attend conferences with clients and barristers
  • Carry out file reviews and risk assessments
  • Handle communication with clients, opposing solicitors, witnesses, experts etc.
  • Prepare case briefs and statements under the supervision of the Managing Director
  • Conduct investigations and documentary research
  • Locate and develop case relevant information
  • Drafting and preparing legal documents, forms, bundles and correspondence under supervision of the Managing Director
  • Adhere to deadlines
  • Set the strategy of cases for conveyancing fee earners
  • Manage the department’s caseload

Qualifications & Training

  • Essential: a Minimum of 12 months of either a Law Degree or working within the field.
  • Desireable: Law Degree

Experience

  • Previous experience in a fast-paced office environment

Qualities & Attitudes

  • Communication skills: You will be working with a wide range of people, from barristers and solicitors to their clients, so the ability to communicate well and in a professional manner is essential.
  • Written communication skills: excellent spelling and grammar. A high level of written English.
  • Attention to detail: high level of accuracy when preparing legal documents or filling out forms and statements.
  • Teamwork: able to work with clients, lawyers, and other legal secretaries.
  • Strong sense of discretion.
  • Courteous and professional demeanour.
  • Demonstrate that they can cope well under pressure.
  • Ability to work towards a monthly target.
  • Desirable: IT skills

Knowledge

  • MS Office and ability to work with legal technology (court-filing computer systems, transcription software, Dictaphone etc)
  • Legal terminology, regulations and court system, although full training will be given.
